With the recent closure of gyms have you found that you haven’t been getting the exercise you normally would? With gyms and fitness centres being able to open soon, it’s important to be mindful that your fitness levels may not be the same as it was when they closed. You might expect to jump straight back into your normal fitness routine but this may take some time.
So before you sprint out the door, let’s take a look at some of the things you can do to get back into your training and back on track.
It is always a good idea to training and exercise goals and now it’s just as important. These goals might be different now to the ones you set yourself at the start of the year. Your main focus might now be to get yourself motivated and back into a normal routine. Once you are back to a normal routine you can revisit some of those goals you set yourself earlier in the year. It might take a little longer to achieve those goals, but that’s ok.
Think about the kind of exercise you like. Did you enjoy doing some of the online classes? If so, perhaps do a few of more these per week to get back into it.
Easy does it
When your gym reopens, don’t book yourself into 100 classes just because you haven’t done anything for two months! Yes, you might be keen to get back into those full body workouts but just remember that your body may have had a break, just like your mind has. Both of these will need to be functioning at full capacity to get the best out of your workout.
The most important thing to keep in mind when you are starting back up again is to go a little slower than you normally would and gradually step it up. Leave some fuel in the tank so your
mind and body will want to continue the next time.
Focus on YOU only
You know the saying “it’s not about being better than someone else, it’s about being than you use to be”. You may see others running faster or further than you or lifting those heavy weights and bags like they used to. Remember, it doesn’t matter if you can’t do it straight away but don’t be too hard on yourself. It may take a little longer to get back to normal and that’s ok, just keep at it.
Stay active – even on days off
With current restrictions about the number of people allowed into gyms, you may not be able to get into all of the classes you normally would. Stay active on the days you can’t get to the gym. Go out for a walk or a run if the weather is nice or use your treadmill if you have one. Revisit some of the online classes or check in with others to see what types of workouts they have been doing.
Be accountable to someone
Tell someone what your goals are and what you are doing to do to get back into a regular exercise pattern. Grab a buddy and work out if there are classes or workouts that you can do together. That way you have someone supporting you along the way.
For some it will be harder to get back into a “normal” pattern but don’t give up. We at enerG+ are here to support you wherever we can.
