Fighting the Winter Germs!

We are half way through winter and with this season comes cozy nights by the fire, hot chocolates, icy cold mornings and GERMS! There are all sorts of cold and flus getting around and for some people, winter feels like a never-ending cycle of being sick. So, what can you do to try and keep yourself healthy? Here are a few tips to try and keep the winter bugs away.

Boost your diet

Make sure you are eating a healthy balanced diet and incorporating lots of foods high in Vitamin C. Vitamin C helps keep your immune system strong, which in turn will help keep those nasty bugs away. Include fruits and vegetables such as lemons, broccoli, oranges and capsicums. So, have a freshly squeezed juice for breakfast or a veggie packed stir fry for dinner.

Get that body moving

I know, I know, we’ve talked about this before. Getting up and going to the gym or getting out for a walk-in winter is the last thing you feel like doing! But studies show that exercising regularly will decrease the amount of sick days you have. So as soon as you see that sunshine, get out in the fresh air and go for a walk. Or stop hitting snooze and head to the gym. Your body (and boss) will thank you for it.

Wash those hands!

Sneezing, coughing, crying eyes. These are all parts of getting sick. But how often a day do you cover your mouth to cough? Or blow your nose? Who could keep track! But are you washing your hands every time? Did the person who used that shopping trolley before you, wash their hands? Frequent hand washing is one of the best ways to stop the spread of germs. So, get scrubbing for at least 20 second with warm soapy water, carry hand sanitizer with you when you go out and take advantage of the wipes shops have and wipe down those trolleys! Who knows who else has been touching them?

Stay Hydrated

Don’t forget to keep drinking water. As the weather cools down, our thirst decreases. So, with that comes a decrease in our water intake. Even though you don’t feel as thirsty, our bodies still need around 2L of water a day. If you’re struggling, there are water bottles around that have time increments on them to help you keep track of where you are at for water intake for the day. Or try herbal tea if you want something warm. There are so many flavours to choose from!

Get some Zzzzzz’s in

Lack of sleep can cause serious damage to your immune system. Which in turn, makes you more susceptible to catching colds. As adults we need 7-9 hours sleep to ensure we are fully rested. Did you know that the more screen time before bed you have, the lower quality of sleep you will have? So in order to make sure you have the best sleep possible, turn off your phone and read a book or have a nice bath before bed. And set a good routine. If you go to bed and get up at the same time every morning, the better quality of sleep you will have.
