Kinesiology Tape explained.......
August 22, 2016

Have you noticed the colourful tapes that some Olympians have been wearing at the Rio Olympics? Have you ever wondered what this tape does and how it can benefit you? Let us explain the benefits of using Kinesiology tape.
Kinesiology tape is a thin, stretchy, elastic cotton tape with an acrylic adhesive. Therapeutic kinesiology tape benefits a wide variety of musculoskeletal and sports injuries, plus inflammatory conditions. You may have noticed that more an more professional and amateur athletes are using kinesiology tape to improve their sporting performance, prevent injury and allow them to return to their chosen sport quicker. There are several different brands of kinesiology tape on the market however, enerG+ use, recommend and sell Rocktape.
What does it do?
Rocktape is a premium brand of kinesiology tape. First used by Acupuncturists and Chiropractors in Japan in the 80’s, today kinesiology tape is used by a wide variety of health professionals throughout the world to treat injuries and pain. You simply apply the tape as you would a normal sports tape however its quite important with Rocktape to apply it with tension (really stretch it out when applied to the skin). When applied with more stretch/tension it can be used to support areas where tissue has been strained, torn, weakened or lengthened. The taped area now has greater stability and support allowing the athlete to perhaps continue training with less strain and discomfort.
How does it work?
Unlike traditional athletic tape that binds and doesn’t stretch, Rocktape is engineered to mimic the human skin. Rocktape stretches up to 180% of its original length but has a ‘snap-back’ or recovery. This is why kinesiology tapes are fast becoming popular on the market - it hardly feels as though you are wearing it.
Who can use the tape?
The tape can be used by athletes of any age. It is suitable for all skin types too. It is a porous tape which allows the skin to breathe making it suitable to athletes who have sensitive skin. Its water resistant and generally it lasts on the skin for up to 5 days.
If you have an injury or you need some assistance with Kinesiology taping then please speak to your enerG+ trainer for some tips on how this can best assist you with your injury recovery. To purchase your own roll of Rock Tape please see staff at enerG+ reception.
